eButterfly is a participatory science program for tracking butterflies, covering observations in Canada and the United States as well as those in Mexico and Central America. Over 400,000 observations have been submitted, covering 705 species. The identification of species is currently validated by experts, but this validation presents a bottleneck and makes the identification process difficult to scale.
To tackle this problem, Mila, a world-renowned Artificial Intelligence research institute and the Montreal Insectarium, the largest insect museum in North America, are working together to create an AI-powered image recognition tool for eButterfly. 
As part of this project, they are offering a paid internship which will take place over 6 months, between May and December 2020.
In order to apply, candidates must be a student of a Canadian university, with skills in Machine Learning (including computer vision and active/transfer learning) and an interest in species conservation and citizen science. They will be supervised by Sasha Luccioni, Mila's Director of Scientific Projects - AI for Humanity, and by Maxim Larrivée, director of the Montreal insectarium.

Postdoctoral position to develop machine learning tools for bat species identification in audio recordings with USGS and Colorado State University.

We seek an outstanding early-career scientist to develop machine learning solutions in support of bat monitoring efforts based on the North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat). The postdoc will develop machine learning algorithms to be used for species classification of bioacoustics and can be deployed through automated procedures on large holdings of acoustic data stored and accessed via cloud infrastructure. Results of classifications (species presence/absence) and estimates of uncertainty will be used in status and trends population models with environmental covariates that account for large-scale system changes. These models will be used to generate maps of species distributions and evaluate changes in of bat species in White-Nose Syndrome (WNS)-free regions. The outcome of this work will be to (1) establish baseline information to better understand the impacts of WNS and (2) improve efficiencies and scalability of acoustic data processing for NABat.

Unrelated to the above opportunity, I'm hiring two postdocs, not in AI per se but in related areas of Bayesian forecasting (there are also projects in AI that could be explored by the successful candidate):

The Lynch Lab at Stony Brook (http://lynchlab.com) has an opening for two postdoctoral researchers to begin as soon as possible. 

The successful applicants will work on several related projects involving Bayesian time series modelling of wildlife. One of these projects will involve the development of new Bayesian sampling algorithms for age-structured population models. In particular, we are working on methods to estimate survival and reproductive success using annual time series of total abundance across all aged breeders. A second project involves the continued development of population models for Antarctic wildlife, expanding a previous model developed for Adelie penguins (Che-Castaldo et al. 2017 Nature Communications) to three additional species: emperor penguins, Weddell seals, and crabeater seals. This latter project involves a highly interdisciplinary team of ecologists and sea ice modellers to understand inter-annual variability in the abundance of Antarctic penguins as well as their response to shifts in Antarctic climate. These models will be coupled with climate models to generate forecasts of abundance and distribution for these four Antarctic species. 

The successful applicant should have or will shortly obtain a PhD in the areas of quantitative ecology or applied math and statistics, or related areas such as computer science and electrical and computer engineering. This position is highly computational and requires a strong background in Python programming and Bayesian data analysis. Prior experience with high-performance computing, age-structured population models, reproducible research, and GitHub/version control, is desirable.

Our research group at the San Diego Zoo is looking for a Senior Research Associate to help with the development of data pipelines for our camera trap studies around the world and to help with our conservation technology lab. This is an entry-level position with a lot of potential to learn and grow.

The Population Sustainability team is looking for a motivated Senior Research Associate to support our large-carnivore research programs and the Conservation Technology Lab. The successful candidate will help with the processing and management of large camera trap datasets from across the world, will write scripts and build data pipelines for efficiently importing and exporting camera trap data in different formats, will support our Zooniverse sites (AmazonCam Tambopata and Wildwatch Kenya), and will help with data analysis. The candidate will also support the Conservation Technology Lab in a variety of tasks from developing data pipelines for a variety of sensors, to building relational databases, training machine learning models, developing software for microcontrollers and single board computers, as well as helping out with hardware development and testing.

This position requires strong quantitative skills as well as proficiency in R and Python programming. A background in geographic information systems (GIS), C/C++ programming, relational databases, as well as occupancy and capture-recapture models are a plus. The position will be based at the Institute for Conservation Research in Escondido, CA. Experience and proficiency with Linux, Bash scripting, NumPy, SciPy, pandas, OpenCV and Git will be considered an asset.

Project summary: Countries around the world have committed to large scale planting of trees to help mitigate climate change impacts. However, the extent to which these are likely to be achieved and the impact of these large-scale restoration initiatives are yet to be predicted. Participants in forest restoration initiatives experience both costs and benefits associated with restoration activities. While approaches to make restoration more attractive have been suggested, there is little guidance of what approaches work in different socio-ecological systems. There have been numerous successful initiatives focused on restoring forest and planting trees around the world, for example the Nepal Community Forestry Program that involved approximately 19,000 community forestry groups and the participation of approximately 35% of the population and the Green Belt movement which empowered women and resulted in 51 million trees being planted in Kenya. There has also been large scale restoration of forest as a result of the abandonment of land as a result of rural to urban migration. While multiple theories explain why people engage in different pro-environmental practices and inform opportunities and constraints in implementing conservation or restoration initiatives, a landholder’s engagement with passive or active restoration still needs to be explored. This project seeks to understand and explain the pattern of adoption of restoration initiatives around the world. This project combines quantitative and qualitative research techniques to understand and explain patterns of spread of tree planting interventions. The project has the following phases: (1) synthesis of literature/development of theory describing the drivers of active and passive restoration, (2) description of existing patterns of adoption or restoration initiatives based on existing data, (3) a qualitative understanding of the processes driving the adoption of restoration initiatives and (4) testing hypotheses that explain the adoption of restoration initiatives using spatial-temporal modelling. This project will allow us to identify context-specific factors that shape spatial patterns and temporal trends of adoption of restoration initiatives, so that they can be designed to be more rapidly adopted and have positive impacts for people and nature.

Two open Postdoc Positions at Yale in Image-based techniques for Environmental/Ecological Science Applications

We are seeking candidates who are comfortable working with image-based approaches (both traditional and ML-based) who would be interested in working on a variety of projects in Environmental/Ecological Science. Postdocs will be primarily advised by faculty in Engineering and Computer Science (Aaron Dollar, (Mechanical Engineering/Computer Science) and Holly Rushmeier (Computer Science)) and will collaborate closely with researchers in Environmental/Ecological Science also at Yale. Two preliminary directions/positions have been identified - 1) Automated phenotyping from Herbarium collections to examine correlations with climate effects, past and present (Dollar), and 2) Texture-based methods for richer suites of information about content contained in images such as camera traps and satellite imagery. Projects are fairly open-ended currently, and we expect candidates to play a leading role in fleshing out the details as well as exploring additional projects/collaborations. We also have an active volunteer student group (undergrads and grads) mostly from CS backgrounds ("Tech for Conservation") who are eager to work on these kinds of projects, and there will be ample opportunity for developing and supervising those students for your primary work and additional side projects.

UC Santa Barbara's Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration is offering a Digital Imaging Assistant (Lab Assistant II)  position as part of the Big-Bee project (http://big-bee.net), a newly funded US National Science Foundation Advancing Digitization of Biodiversity Collections initiative to understand bee declines via specimen image digitization and trait analysis. Over the course of three years, we will create over one million high-resolution 2D and 3D images of bee specimens, representing over 5,000 worldwide bee species, including most of the major pollinating species. We will develop tools to measure bee traits from images and generate comprehensive bee trait and image datasets to measure changes through time. The Big-Bee network of participating institutions includes thirteen US institutions and partnerships with US government agencies. We will develop novel mechanisms for sharing image datasets and datasets of bee traits that will be available through an open, Symbiota data portal called the Bee Library. 

Reporting to the Director of the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration at UC Santa Barbara, the Digital Imaging Assistant will collaborate closely with the Director to lead the digitization of bee specimens from natural history collections at UCSB via 3D and 2D imaging. They will help develop novel methods in imaging and anatomical trait measurement, including crowdsourcing measurements via the Notes From Nature community science platform. Applicants for this position are expected from various disciplines because of the cross-cutting nature of the work, and applicants from entomology, media arts, engineering, digital arts, biodiversity data science, museum curation, or related fields are welcome.



Job responsibilities include:

1. implement imaging and processing workflows for 2D & 3D specimen imaging;
2. evaluate results to determine scientific accuracy;
3. organize, manage, and preserve digital files, including raw data, metadata, and derivatives;
4. coordinate undergraduate imaging and research internships;
5. create training and outreach materials in specimen imaging;
6. assist in the overall coordination of the Big-Bee network;
7. and perform other duties as assigned.



Preferred candidates will also demonstrate:

1. knowledge of basic principles of photography;
2. knowledge in insect morphology;
3. knowledge about natural history collection databases, particularly Symbiota, and biodiversity data sharing;
4. comfort with diverse software tools (Adobe) and online collaboration platforms (Google Documents, Slack, GitHub);
5. writing and understanding of a scripting language (Python, R);
6. the ability to meet a high level of production on a daily basis and work in a fast-paced, multi-project and dynamic environment;
7. the ability to drive project completion on time and in a detailed manner, as well as self-motivation, intelligence, and strong work ethic;
8. excellent organizational skills, good communication skills including writing and verbal;
9. comfort with handling small delicate objects.

The person will join a research group focused on biodiversity data science and entomology. They will work closely with Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration Director, Dr. Katja Seltmann, who also has a background in media arts. The position is based at the University of California, Santa Barbara but includes cooperation with colleagues at other institutions. This is a full-time position (including full benefits) with a starting salary range between $20.14 - $21.31/hour. I am currently a master’s student at ETH Zurich and will start my Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence for Environmental Risks at Cambridge in September. As I have done my thesis, I am looking for a 3-5 months research internship before my Ph.D. study and will be able to start immediately. My research interests lie in object recognition, deep learning as well as their applications for environmental sustainability. My thesis studied fast few-shot object detection. Prior to that, I have also developed an algorithm classifying the photographs of plant species from citizen science projects. Besides few-shot learning, I also have hands-on experiences in fields such as meta-learning, domain adaptation, and remote sensing. The Lab is a founding partner of BirdCast, which began more than two decades ago, aimed at observing and forecasting bird movements with radar and remote sensing technology in real time. Rapid advances in data availability and method development in the field of radar aeroecology have revolutionized avian ecology, by providing unprecedented information on aerial bird movements across space and time. BirdFlow: Learning Seasonal Bird Movements from eBird Data

Large-scale monitoring of seasonal animal movement is integral to science, conservation, and outreach. However, gathering representative movement data across entire species ranges is frequently intractable. Citizen science databases collect millions of animal observations throughout the year, but it is challenging to infer individual movement behavior solely from observational data. We present BirdFlow, a probabilistic modeling framework that draws on citizen science data from the eBird database to model the population flows of migratory birds. We apply the model to 11 species of North American birds, using GPS and satellite tracking data to tune and evaluate model performance. We show that BirdFlow models can accurately infer individual seasonal movement behavior directly from eBird relative abundance estimates. Supplementing the model with a sample of tracking data from wild birds improves performance. Researchers can extract a number of behavioral inferences from model results, including migration routes, timing, connectivity, and forecasts. The BirdFlow framework has the potential to advance migration ecology research, boost insights gained from direct tracking studies, and serve a number of applied functions in conservation, disease surveillance, aviation, and public outreach.<br><br>### Competing Interest Statement<br><br>The authors have declared no competing interest.

The Forest Change Analysis Lab at UC Davis is recruiting for several new research and field positions:

• Spatial Data Scientist: This is a career-track position for candidates with a MS or PhD, beginning between January and September 2023, with a salary of $56,300 - $72,000 depending on qualifications. Gaia AI is looking to hire a perception robotics+AI engineer! Gaia AI is an MIT+Harvard spinout startup that is using robotics+AI technology, similar to the what my team has built for autonomous vehicles, to measure trees and forests. With our sensor backpack (LiDAR + Computer Vision) we measure biometrics on trees below the forest canopy, and then combine that measurement with satellite imagery from above. Advanced analytical and computational approaches could include AI and ML approaches, innovative data harmonization techniques, advanced statistical approaches, robust scientific software, new cloud-compute architectures, etc. The research will also use a broad swath of environmental data types and sources such as remote sensing data, e.g., Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) to airborne collections to satellite sensors; observatory field network data (e.g., NEON, CZNet, LTER); paleo records; synthetic or modeled environmental data; biorepositories; eDNA; citizen science and crowdsourced data; or other relevant environmental/biological data.

There is a three-course teaching load per year associated with this position. Teaching needs are associated with the three-course professional certificate in Earth Analytics that is taught through Earth Lab and Geography. Two courses will be taught in the professional certificate in Earth Analytics (which is taught in a hybrid-mode) and a third course will be taught in Geography on remote sensing applications, geographical information science, physical geography, or advanced analytical approaches using environmental data (determined based on the candidate’s specific expertise).

Minimum academic requirements include a PhD at the time of appointment in geography, ecology, ecosystem science, evolutionary biology, or a related field such as computer science, data science, information science, and/or geographic information science, with a demonstrated research record in environmental science.

We would like the candidate to have a foundation in data science and skills (e.g., experience in distributed computing and workflow management either on HPC, HTC, or Cloud) and a commitment to open science practices. The candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to greater diversity and inclusion in the field of EDS.

Opening: Post-doctoral fellow in Computer Vision for Ecology at Caltech

Professors Gkioxari and Perona at the California Institute of Technology are seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Computer Vision. The initial appointment is for one year renewable yearly for up to three years.

The post-doctoral fellow will be the lead scientist for a project that applies Computer Vision to Ecology and Conservation. The goal of the project is counting salmon traveling upstream in rivers of the Pacific Northwest from underwater ultrasound video that is collected by government and tribal agencies at thirty river locations across Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California. Success in the project will have immediate impact in management and conservation of salmon fisheries in the Pacific Northwest, where salmon is a key component of the economy, ecology and culture. The long-term scope of the project includes applications of Computer Vision to Ecology where animals are to be detected, counted, and classified with minimal prior training of the system. Thus, the long-term impact is improving and expanding data collection for Ecology and Conservation efforts worldwide.

The project pushes the envelope of Computer Vision and Machine Learning in a number of directions. The system will need to detect and count animals accurately at new locations beyond the training sites, and in the face of changing environmental conditions . It will also need to classify the species of each animal according to visual appearance and behavior. Thus developing methods for self-supervised learning, domain adaptation and fine-grained classification in video will be priorities for the technical approach.

The post-doc will report to Professors Pietro Perona and Georgia Gkioxari and will be responsible for the scientific and engineering success of the project. The post-doc researcher will work within the framework of the DiviN-P project “Protecting plant diversity via stoichiometric nutrient networks across Europe”, funded by the European program Biodiversa+. The project is led by prof. Martin Wassen (Utrecht University, the Netherlands), and includes as project partners the groups of prof. Susana Bautista (Univ of Alicante, Spain) and of prof. Harry OldeVenterink (Univ. of Ghent, Belgium), together with the group of Dr. Mara Baudena at CNR-ISAC where the postdoc researcher will be hired.

Aiming to understand the vulnerability of species and ecosystems to changes and interactions in nutrient availability, stoichiometry, and climate, this project utilizes and analyzes a large and unique dataset of grassland sites across Europe, uses mathematical models of plant communities, and performs experimental tests on critical factors and species interactions to investigate the spatial distribution and diversity patterns of herbaceous plant species and communities over Europe in relation to environmental change. This project is therefore of pivotal importance for developing effective management measures, nutrient policies and network planning for protecting wild populations of plant species in Europe, especially those at risk of extinction. The overarching objective of this project is to identify which types of herbaceous plant communities are most vulnerable to species loss and turnover in response to changes in nutrient supply, nutrient stoichiometry, species invasions, climate change, and their interactions.

Within DiviN-P, the postdoc will work in WP3 to predict likely future changes in community assembly and diversity patterns in European grasslands, as a consequence of i) expansion of common and invasive species; ii) northward migration of species from Southern Europe because of climate change. Specifically, this work will aim at:
• identifying drivers of current community assembly patterns and functional diversity in different environmental conditions
• delivering scenarios of future changes in alpha and beta diversity due to climate change and to species invasion and expansion

California’s urban forests. The position is based at the Urban Forest Institute (UFI) and California Polytechnic State

Currently, we are seeking a post-doctoral researcher to assist on a project that aims to (1) identify California’s most
vulnerable urban forests and determine which climate-adapted tree species are best suited for California’s most
disadvantaged communities, (2) leverage an existing and widely-used web based tree selection guide, SelecTree, to
provide this information to communities, (3) develop and provide resources and training to stakeholders about
climate-adapted species selection and care, and (4) to leverage existing relationships with large-scale nurseries to
ensure supply of climate-adapted trees as well as connect grantees to these nurseries so they can effectively source
appropriate species. This position will be primarily responsible for conducting climate niche modeling for tree
species. A successful candidate will have skills in manipulating large datasets such as climate data and species
occurrence data, and strong geo-spatial skills in ArcGIS and R. Experience with novel methods of climate niche
modeling is required.

Project description:
The post-doc researcher will work within the framework of the DiviN-P project "Protecting plant diversity via stoichiometric nutrient networks across Europe", funded by the European program Biodiversa+. The project is led by prof. Martin Wassen (Utrecht University, the Netherlands), and includes as project partners the groups of prof. Susana Bautista (Univ of Alicante, Spain) and of prof. Harry OldeVenterink (Univ. of Ghent, Belgium), together with the group of Dr. Mara Baudena at CNR-ISAC where the postdoc researcher will be hired.

Aiming to understand the vulnerability of species and ecosystems to changes and interactions in nutrient availability, stoichiometry, and climate, this project utilizes and analyzes a large and unique dataset of grassland sites across Europe, uses mathematical models of plant communities, and performs experimental tests on critical factors and species interactions to investigate the spatial distribution and diversity patterns of herbaceous plant species and communities over Europe in relation to environmental change. This project is therefore of pivotal importance for developing effective management measures, nutrient policies and network planning for protecting wild populations of plant species in Europe, especially those at risk of extinction. The overarching objective of this project is to identify which types of herbaceous plant communities are most vulnerable to species loss and turnover in response to changes in nutrient supply, nutrient stoichiometry, species invasions, climate change, and their interactions.

Within DiviN-P, the postdoc will work to predict likely future changes in community assembly and diversity patterns in European grasslands, as a consequence of i) expansion of common and invasive species; ii) northward migration of species from Southern Europe because of climate change. Specifically, this work will aim at:
• identifying drivers of current community assembly patterns and functional diversity in different environmental conditions
• delivering scenarios of future changes in alpha and beta diversity due to climate change and to species invasion and expansion

We were recently awarded the ACM Gordon Bell Prize for HPC-Based COVID-19 Research for our Genome-Scale Language Models.

We are looking for postdocs with a lot of coding experience (particularly with large language models) – especially those with backgrounds in biophysics, bioinformatics, computational biology, chemical biology, biochemistry, related biological fields, computer science, and/or data science.
