Hi all, an overflow room is setup in 212 a few doors down
Any cv4animals groups getting together tonight?
Hi - I'm doing a project for a client - it's very loose right now - but I wanted to get a demo of some kind of species identification (birds or flora or similar) using photographs. Can anyone recommend a good place to start - or a half decent open source model ? There's a few on Kaggle, but it's a bit hard to know if they are good/easy to get into.

For the CV4Animals workshop submissions do all authors need an OpenReview profile or just the submitting author? We are running into delays for a non-academic co-author 😞
Did you see that we extended the deadline to April 4?
Is there an estimate for the publication date of the recorded talks?
Dear @Patrik Reiske, I cannot speak for the CV4Animal organizers, but since we were recording the Animal Re-Identification tutorial, I asked Nicole, who is in charge of the CVPR organization, and I was told there is a 3-month ban on releasing recordings outside the CVPR portal.

Hi everyone, is it just me or has the second part of “The IJCV submission portal will be ready shortly, and more detailed instructions will follow.” not happened, yet? It seems like the submission portal is already open. Thanks in advance.
Hi folks, does anyone have a favorite publicly available animal object detection dataset for developing code? I’m writing some software and developing it using the ena24 dataset on LILA, but I’m finding that the annotations are often incorrect.
I’m hoping to find a dataset that is small, but well annotated and in COCO format. I don’t really need more than a few classes for what I’m working on. Thank you
You can sub select from things like COCO, which is probably one of the cleaner datasets?
@Mikey Tabak if you have a chance, can you send me the gestalt of the wrong-ness you've come across in ENA24? Although it's not very big, I think of that as one of the more straightforward/correct datasets on LILA, so good for debug/test tasks. It's small enough that I don't hate the idea of manually correcting issues that come up.
If there is a list of example issues, rather than quick one-line summary, easier to send by email (agentmorris@gmail.com). Thanks!
Hi Dan, I just started using it on this project and noticed that some of the bounding boxes are drawn much larger than the object itself. So if there is an animal that takes up 10% of the image, the box is maybe 30% of the image.
But then as I started using it this time I remembered using it years ago and finding that a lot of the animals are incorrectly classed. I was using it for out of sample testing and found that a lot of the times my model was incorrect, it was actually the ena24 label that was incorrect.
If I get back to using it, I’ll keep notes of which images I have problems with.
I recall Adam Harley presenting at CV4Animals in 2024 talking about a lot of work he did cleaning up datasets for training a foundational video model.
https://adamharley.com/tag/index.html
Table 1 had a whole slew of datasets that he approved as good quality. Most of them aren't "animals", but might be a gem to inspect.
Also, if you want to explore a bit more, calculating bounding boxes on segmentation/keypoint data could be another option. This would open up something like the Animal Kingdom dataset (although I haven't inspected it personally to comment on quality). Keep in mind keypoints are rather risky since they're seldom on the borders and calculated boxes would trend to be a crop of the animal rather than a proper bounding box.
Hello all, I'm interested in a tool which can identify stickers (think labels with animal identity written or typed on them) in an image and output strings of characters. This technology clearly exists in the wild and works pretty well on our phones, but I would need something that I can integrate into a python workflow.
I'm in the process of building up my own solution using segmentation, tesseract, and opencv, but keep thinking that somebody must have developed this tool already and done it much better than I will be able to do. Does anybody know of such a thing?
Would something like fiducial markers work, or do these stickers already exist? There are a bunch of libraries for things like AprilTags, ARTags, ArUco markers, etc. maybe?
The stickers already exist. Thanks for all your suggestions though, we will probably include these in future data that is collected. I didn't know any of them by name.
Don't know if it still helps but I found paddle paddle to work a lot more robustly than tesseract without uch need for preprocessing or detection
Thanks, Luke. I had given up on Tesseract being able to do something usable out of the box and had resigned to manual transcription, but I'll give paddle paddle a try and see if works.
Hi All,
I am co-hosting a workshop/symposium at the upcoming World Seabird Conference in Hobart, Tasmania, September 7-11, 2026 that I think folks in this workspace would be interested in! This event is in-person only at the moment, but I am trying to look into the possibility of streaming presentations.
Workshop W02: Next-generation seabird monitoring: from technology and machine learning to conservation best practice
Conveners: Anna Vallery (Audubon Washington, USA), Wade Sedgwick (Island Foundation, USA), Matt Wood (University of Gloucestershire, UK), Alice Edney (National Trust Scotland, UK)
Emerging technologies are transforming how we monitor seabirds, providing critical insights into responses to threats such as climate change, habitat loss, and other environmental changes. Seabird monitoring programs around the globe are rapidly accumulating large datasets from drones, satellites, cameras, and other automated sensors, but refined protocols for managing and analyzing these datasets lag behind, limiting comparability and slowing adoption of new tools across programs and regions worldwide. This session will bring together experts in applications of these tools and machine learning in ecology to assess how technology can best support evidence-based management, sharing successes, pitfalls, and future plans while balancing innovation with realism about the limitations of technology in the field. The symposium will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about available tools and current work in this field. By bridging cutting-edge science and policy needs, the workshop will then provide an opportunity for those interested to collaboratively draft best-practice guidelines to ensure robustness, accessibility, reproducibility, and cost-effectiveness of next-generation seabird monitoring efforts, strengthening conservation planning while ensuring seabird monitoring remains robust into the next decade.
Abstracts for the conference are due January 15th! I am happy to answer any questions. Please feel free to pass along this information to anyone you think may be interested. I am also happy to chat with folks directly at annacvallery@gmail.com.
I hope to see some of you all there! https://worldseabirdunion.org/world-seabird-conference-home/
@Wade Sedgwick
Hi community! I was wondering if there will be a CV4Animals workshop this year. It’s not listed among the twelve workshops for the 2026 CVPR on OpenReview. However, the list is obviously not complete yet. The workshop’s website has not been updated since last year’s conference. And there was no announcement in this Slack channel either. Thanks in advance!
Hi Patrik, I have heard that the CV4Animals was accepted as a half day workshop. Hopefully someone from the organization team can verify soon.
Yes, we were accepted for a half-day workshop. We are refreshing the look of our workshop website, and we hope it will be online in the next few weeks. 😊😊
